Classes will be held throughout the year to help homeowners gain a better understanding of efficient gardening, and landscaping.  Classes with two dates will be repeated.  Discounts are available for Friends of the Gardens Members. For more information about becoming a member, click here.

March - Proper Pruning Practices

Fruit Pruning Demonstrations
Take the fear out of pruning by learning the art and science of proper pruning practices.  The focus will be on apples, peaches, grapes and raspberries.  This outdoor event is one of the most popular workshops, so dress for the occasion and come ready to learn.

Landscape Plants Pruning Demonstration
Come learn how to prune your roses, ornamental trees and shrubs, or sit in on a class explaining the basics of fruit tree pruning. Each class will last one hour and be repeated each hour. Come listen to one or all four.

April - Backyard Bounties - Get Growing!

The "Joys" of Raised Bed Gardening
Local gardening authors, Joy Bossi and Karen Bastow, will teach the many advantages of growing vegetables and herbs using the raised bed method.  Learn from this famous gardening duo how to efficiently use garden space and economically save money with raised bed gardening.  Autographed copies of their book "Joy in the Garden" will be available to purchase after class.

Fruit Tree Grafting

Composting Basics
Learn the benefits and techniques of composting to get the most out of your growing space. Compost is a rich soil amendment that will benefit your garden plants, house plants and the environment by diverting compostable material from the the landfill.

June - Art in the Garden

Tree Walk
Enjoy a leisurely stroll through the newly dedicated Varga Arboretum. Come learn from horticulturist JayDee Gunnell of the unique characteristics of over 150 different species of trees that perform great in the intermountain area, and which ones might fit best in your own landscape.

Botanical Water Color Class
Geared for the novice, but appropriate for all art levels, this class will introduce art and plant lovers to the world of botanical illustrations. Be inspired by the gardens at the Utah Botanical Center and learn techniques to help you capture the color and texture of flowers.  This course, taught by local artist Carolee Glaittli, will inspire you to get out in the garden and enjoy the beauty of nature. Materials will be provided.

July - Gardens Galore

Budding Workshop

August - Wildflower Tour (Garden Members Only)

Wildflower Tour
Friends of the Garden membership will be heading to the beautiful Jackson Hole, Wyoming for a guided in-depth wildflower experience in the Teton Mountains & surrounding areas. This will be a 3 day/2 night guided experience of the flora of Grand Teton National Park. From the top of Rendezvous Mountain alone, at a staggering 10,450 feet, there are more than 100 species of alpine wildflowers to enjoy and photograph. Space is limited, so sign up today.

Food Preservation
Learn how to preserve the harvest of your garden.   This fun hands-on workshop held in the Utah House kitchen, will teach participants safe food preservation methods. Topics discussed will include; drying, freezing, and canning. Enjoy healthy locally grown food throughout the year. There will be 2 sessions held to accommodate a larger audience.

Wreath Making Class
Learn techniques to make a fun wreath for holiday decorating that you can use for many years to come. The class is early enough in the season that you may want to go home and make them for all off the people on your gift list.  Bring your own glue gun if you have one, all supplies will be furnished.
